After a brief delay caused by a medical episode in the audience, Urzila Carlson made what appeared to be an unplanned entrance, assuring the crowd she didn't want to keep them waiting any longer. With the house lights still up, she launched straight into an impromptu set, immediately demonstrating the conversational, unfiltered style that has made her one of Australia's most popular comedians.

Before the formal show had even begun, Carlson was already finding laughs in the mundane. She discussed her merchandise, particularly a bucket hat that led neatly into an explanation of her chosen comedy-show safe word: "bucket". The story traced back to her childhood on her family's farm in South Africa, where, according to Carlson, buckets certainly did not represent safety for the unfortunate animals placed inside them. It was the first of many examples throughout the evening where an ordinary detail from her life became the foundation for a brilliantly absurd punchline.

Carlson quickly reassured audience members seated near the stage that they could relax. Unlike comedians who delight in targeting unsuspecting patrons, she explained that this tour was about her life, not theirs. That said, should any audience conflict erupt during the performance, she had a foolproof solution: a few choice four-letter words and a well-placed wet willy.

Townsville itself was not spared. Carlson wasted no time mocking North Queensland's idea of winter, comparing the climate to being accustomed to living in a man's hot groin. Given the current temperatures, the observation drew knowing laughter from locals. One suspects, however, that she may reconsider such jokes if she ever returns during the height of summer.

Proudly and unapologetically gay, Carlson's identity formed a recurring thread throughout the evening. Rainbow lighting framed the stage, while her "PRIDE QUEEN" T-shirt reinforced the celebratory tone. Her stories about life as a lesbian generated some of the night's biggest laughs, particularly her enthusiastic appreciation for DIY projects, Bunnings, and, more specifically, the women who work there. Carlson has a gift for finding humour in personal experiences while making them instantly relatable to a wider audience.

The show also offered plenty of insight into her personality and family life. She spoke candidly about parenting, menopause, personal hygiene, and her comfort with nudity, though she drew a firm line at receiving poorly photographed nude selfies from others.

Not all of the material was lighthearted on the surface. Carlson also touched on her mother's early-onset Alzheimer's diagnosis, demonstrating her ability to find warmth and humour within deeply personal experiences. It is one of her greatest strengths in her comedy routine: the capacity to transform everyday challenges and vulnerabilities into moments of shared laughter.

Among the standout stories was an extended tale involving her beloved dog, Molly. What began as a simple pet-owner anecdote escalated into a wonderfully chaotic saga involving a “SNAFU” in which Molly was accidentally switched with another dog. Carlson stretched every possible laugh from the situation, using her trademark storytelling skills to build tension before delivering perfectly timed punchlines.

The final section of the show centred on body image, dieting, and the much-discussed weight-loss drug Ozempic, which Carlson was quick to clarify she does not use. It was hilarious to hear her lament the celebrities the plus-size community has "lost" to major weight-loss journeys, speaking of Adele and Rebel Wilson as though they were fallen comrades remembered at a memorial service.

In this final act of the night, the meaning behind the tour's title, Fatty on a Yacht, became abundantly clear. Carlson recounted feeling wildly out of place during an extravagant yachting daytrip filled with glamorous, bikini-clad women, impossibly small portions of pretentious food, and an atmosphere of effortless luxury. In contrast, she arrived armed with an esky, or perhaps a chilly bin, depending on which side of the Tasman you're from, packed with enough real food to save the party from collective starvation and excessive drunkenness.

Throughout the evening, Carlson displayed the qualities that have made her such a beloved performer: authenticity, self-deprecation, sharp observational humour, and an ability to find comedy in the most ordinary corners of life. Fatty on a Yacht is less a stand-up show and more a hilarious conversation with a friend who happens to have plenty of loud and proud stories to tell.
