Magnetic Tease bills itself as a “high-voltage world of glitter, drama, and irresistible allure,” and while the glitter was certainly present, this cabaret-style showcase, made up of local and national artists of varied experience, offered a mixed bag of burlesque, drag, and variety acts.
Host Gigi Peach opened the night with a few house rules and a warm welcome, setting a friendly tone for the evening. Her introductions were competent, if not particularly electric, and she kept the show moving with a steady rhythm. The first act, local pole dancer Darcy, delivered one of the night’s standout performances. Her athleticism and control were genuinely impressive, and she brought a level of polish.

From there, the show veered into the realm of the bizarre. Nude vampire puppetry made an appearance and while it certainly earned points for originality, it felt more like a fever dream than a fully formed act. A performance by a weed-clad dancer that seemed to be a feminine mash-up of Jim Carrey’s The Riddler and Cheech & Chong’s cannabis-loving antics did get some laughs from the crowd.

Haywood Jablowme brought some light-hearted fun with his money gun and inflatable guitar, “pouring some sugar” on the audience in a moment that felt more like a novelty gag than a showstopper. Drag Dolly Parton made a brief appearance, reminding us she’s still in the game, though her moment in the spotlight felt more like a cameo than a fully realised performance.

The more refined acts came from out-of-town performers, particularly those from the Gold Coast and beyond. One especially energising number inspired by The Little Mermaid injected a new level of humour and stage presence into the evening, standing out as a highlight and finale.

To its credit, Magnetic Tease is clearly a space for performers to develop their craft and enjoy themselves on stage, amongst more seasoned performers who lead the way. That spirit of experimentation and self-expression is palpable, and the supportive crowd clapped and cheered with genuine enthusiasm, helping to lift the energy.
While the show promises “unforgettable spectacle,” what it delivers is more of a glittery grab bag—some acts shine, while others need a little more rehearsal to give them a lift. It’s a spirited effort with heart, and if you’re looking for a night of bold beauty and playful provocation, you’ll find some nuggets of gold here.
