Townsville Little Theatre has delivered a pre-Christmas treat with their double-header comedy show, perfectly blending humour, heart, and high-quality performances. Directed by Christine Scott and penned by David Tristram, the two one-act plays showcase the endearing chaos of the Little Grimley Dramatic Society, a struggling community theatre group determined to survive against all odds.
The cast of four, brimming with Townsville theatre stalwarts, brings the quirky characters to life with undeniable charisma. Glenn Shield shines as Gordon, the society’s manipulative yet oddly creative chairman. His sharp comedic timing elevates the role, as he relentlessly schemes to save the society from financial ruin—even at the expense of his fellow cast members’ pride.
Jennine Padgett is a scene-stealer as Margaret, the self-appointed leading lady with unwavering confidence. Padgett's impeccable delivery and nuanced facial expressions capture Margaret’s blend of elegance and absurdity, earning plenty of laughs while grounding the character in sincerity.
Jacinta Ryan is delightful as Joyce, the ever-optimistic yet somewhat oblivious dreamer. Her disastrous rendition of What’s New Pussycat—complete with hilariously offbeat dancing—provides some of the show’s biggest laughs, aided by Gordon’s biting commentary. Ryan’s charm and comedic flair make Joyce an audience favourite.
Reynold Lookcamp brings a subtle humour to Bernard, the reluctant set designer-turned-actor. His grumbling resistance to the spotlight, paired with his dry delivery, creates a perfect foil to the group’s eccentricities.
Behind the scenes, the technical aspects are just as commendable. The set design and costuming add to the charm and believability of the Little Grimley world, while the lighting and sound enhance the comedic beats without overshadowing the performances.
It was wonderful to see the backstage crew being brought into the spotlight in the finale, a reminder of the teamwork that makes community theatre so special.
This double-header is a comedic gem, filled with laugh-out-loud moments, clever writing, and strong performances. For Townsville locals, it’s a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season while supporting local theatre. Don't miss it!
