Indy C returned to NAFA in 2025 with her one-night only show No Safe Space, and despite the title, the vibe was more “group therapy with punchlines” than anything remotely threatening. From the moment show opener Samantha George warmed up the crowd, it was clear we were in for a night of laughter and truth bombs.
Having seen Indy’s 2024 NAFA debut, I was curious to see what a year of life had done to her comedy—and turns out, quite a lot. She’s been through the wringer, but instead of wallowing, she’s turned her experiences into a masterclass in storytelling. Her tales of motherhood (and her not-so-secret disdain for children), breast cancer, and the tragic loss of her “best assets” were delivered with a wink and a wince, balancing vulnerability with razor-sharp wit.
What sets Indy apart is her refusal to fabricate. Her comedy is mined straight from the chaos of real life—dating disasters, pet ownership gone rogue, and the eternal mystery of why friends think “just popping by” is ever okay. Her reflections on her identity as a black, Muslim, bisexual woman in a place like Townsville are handled with grace and a generous dose of sarcasm.

The standout moment for me was her allegorical tale of European and Asian bees. Equal parts National Geographic and TED Talk, it buzzed with messages about racial difference and tolerance, leaving the audience both laughing and pondering over her lived experience.
Indy C doesn’t just tell jokes; she builds bridges. And in a world that often feels like one big “unsafe space,” her show was a welcome reminder that regardless of our identity, we all can find common ground in good humour.
