Contemporary contrasts – experimenting with the human condition
Contemporary Theatre Research Lab Inc.'s latest production, "inter[action]," directed by the innovative Todd Barty, is a captivating exploration of the human condition. Drawing from the works of literary titans such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Oscar Wilde, and Virginia Woolf, this non-linear collage theatre performance intentionally shatters traditional storytelling conventions to delve into themes of love, chaos, curiosity, self-discovery, and duplicity.
Interestingly, Barty sets the context of the performance in his audience welcome, foreshadowing the absence of a traditional narrative structure and characterisation which one would anticipate in most theatrical work. Instead, he encourages onlookers to interpret it in their own way, rather than project his perspectives and state the obvious.
Barty has assembled a talented troupe of young actors, most of whom are returning after last year's gothic success, "Knock, Knock, Knock." Annika Brice stands out with her effervescent performance, bringing both spark and conviction to the stage. Megan Fry adds a touch of whimsy and innocence to her character, while Paige Thomas shines as she fully embraces the experimental nature of the production, a change from her background in musical theatre. Courtney Starr, in her debut role, delivers a strong performance that belies her inexperience, holding her own alongside her more seasoned colleagues.
The performance is staged in the beautiful open courtyard of the Indigenous Education and Research Centre at James Cook University, providing a unique and immersive theatre experience. Barty's percussive accompaniment to punctuate scene transitions, an unexpected outburst of laughter from neighbouring kookaburras, and the curious presence of a lone curlew add to the dreamy and distinctive atmosphere of the show.
"Delightful. Absurd. Alarming. Terrific" - the script is overflowing with antithesis to reveal the full spectrum of human emotion. The combination of a talented cast, innovative direction, and a captivating setting ensures that "inter[action]" is a must-see for theatre enthusiasts who are looking for something left-of-centre. Running just shy of 60 minutes, this is a performance to spark reflective contemplation, and with only four performances remaining, be sure to grab your ticket to this introspective and quirky theatre experience.
