Townsville’s own CircUP Arts soared to dazzling heights with their latest offering, Cloud Nine, staged in the Virago Tent. Led by circus queen Laura Shum, this vibrant showcase brought together a cast of adult trainers and performers from the region’s only dedicated circus school, delivering a performance that was inspiring and technically impressive.
From the moment the ringmaster stepped into the spotlight, the audience was in good hands. With a warm presence and a touch of cheeky humour, he introduced each act weaving in playful commentary and took a moment to give a well-placed plug for CircUP Arts’ mission to nurture local talent and offer an inclusive space for enthusiasts.

Each act was a testament to the performers’ strength, skill, and dedication. The show moved seamlessly between breathtaking aerial displays and gravity-defying ground acrobatics, showcasing the versatility of movement and the artistry of physical performance. It was clear that every performer had poured hours of training and passion into their craft.

A standout moment was Laura Shum’s turn on the rope coined by the ringmaster as the “noodle of danger”, a technically demanding act with high-level skill. Equally memorable were the elegant duo performances, which offered a beautiful contrast to the more adrenaline-fuelled aerial work. These quieter moments of understated grace added depth and texture to the show, highlighting the emotional range of circus as an art form.

The finale was a neon display of colour and light, with illuminated spinning hoops and juggling balls in an otherwise darkened arena. If time had allowed, a touch more knife juggling or a reprise from Mr Stilts would have been a fun way to round out the performance.

CircUP Arts continues to be a cornerstone of local artistic development, and Cloud Nine was a glowing reminder of the magic that happens when community, talent, and vision come together. Bravo to the entire troupe!
